Pizza Waffles: an Italiano-Belgium delight

About 10 years ago I remember going to Milkylane for some sweet treats with my family. However, because I aim to be different, and always want to try new things I decided to order Milkylane’s savoury waffle pizza. I was merely a child, with no true knowledge about food, but that delicious snack had such an impact on my taste buds that I could never forget it. I Remember the sweet taste of the waffle cake itself complementing the white cheesy sauce so well, with a hint of peppery mushroom flavours that came through 2 seconds after each bite… At that moment I thought to myself, who was the genius behind this idea, combining two of the greatest foods of all time i.e. the waffle and the pizza, something I like to now call: the Italiano-Belgium delight. I call it this because as we know Pizzas originated from Italy, and Waffles from Belgium. While I tried, I could not actually find out who exactly came up with the concept, but it is one that many people including Milkylane can take credit for.

While this wonderfully delicious snack is well-known to some people, many aren’t aware it exists and are quite happy and comfortable eating their waffles with syrups and sweet sauces. I would fully advise those people to give the waffle-pizza a try, it really is something amazing!
I made this treat as part of my Food Communication Demonstration last year, and I am proud to say it was indeed a hit with the audience, something they have all tried for the first time!

Since we are different, we will of course prefer our waffles a certain way, therefore it is essential to note that there is no fixed recipe for this snack/light meal. I personally prefer mine with a spread of all gold tomato sauce, topped with a bit of mozzarella and cheddar cheese, mushrooms and a sprinkle of italian herbs which not only gives off a tantalizing aroma, but makes it all come together.

So here is a quick recipe, for those who would love to try this at home.
to make waffles from scratch:

INGREDIENTS:
4 large eggs
250ml milk
10ml baking powder
2ml salt
500ml flour
125ml melted butter (cooled)
10ml sugar
5ml vanilla essence

METHOD:
Beat eggs and sugar until light and foamy. Add all wet ingredients. Sift together flour and baking powder then add to egg mixture. Add the salt and beat mixture well.
Bake in a preheated and lightly oiled waffle iron and serve as desired.

Makes ± 10 waffles
Your homemade waffles are to be prepared beforehand, then left to cool slightly before adding your toppings.
If you’re just too consumed by time, or simply lazy it is perfectly fine to purchase ready-made frozen waffles. I must admit, I too purchased those ready-made waffles due to time and yes, laziness, but they’re just as great!

Once you have your waffles at hand, it is time to get creative!
I wont be providing a set recipe for this step but rather let Your imagination and taste buds run wild, and allow you to top it off with whatever you have in your refrigerator. After you have topped up your waffle, bake for about 10-12 minutes at 180 degrees celsius or until cheese has melted and it is well heated. Since you’re simply re-heating it, it is not necessary to pre-heat the oven but this step will speed up the process.

It is essential to note that this is in fact a luxury snack and should be eaten in moderation. I am well aware that it is tempting is to eat it as often as possible, but it is also my duty to inform the public and make them aware of the nutritional facts. For a healthier option however, you could find a waffle recipe which uses whole-wheat flour instead, as this will provide you with a dose of fibre. Also be aware of what toppings you use and make sure you add some vegetables such as bell peppers as this too may be beneficial for those who are more health conscious.

So to all those waffle and pizza lovers out there, do give this recipe a try, and be sure to indulge!

edible pleasures to all,
